Below are the details of what each of the headings mean in our
broadband comparison table here. |
Broadband Supplier (alphabetical) |
Our list of broadband suppliers is sorted
alphabetically to keep it fair. |
Connection Fee |
The connection or installation fee is what the
broadband supplier will charge you to set up the service. |
Modem |
This is how much it will cost you to buy the broadband
modem. |
Cost per Month |
How much you pay every month, usually via direct debit
from your bank account. It's worth noting that this cost will include
all of your Internet calls. |
Speed |
Your basic standard old-fashioned dial-up connection is
typically 56 kbps (kilobit per second). Most broadband connections are
512 kbps which if you divide 512 by 56 you get 9.1. Therefore a 512
kbps broadband connection is approx. 9.1 times faster than a dial-up
Internet connection. Although most broadband providers round this up
to 10 times faster as it sounds better! A 1 Mbps connection is
typically approx. 20 times faster that a dial-up 56 kbps dial-up
Internet connection. |
